John,

Do you go to St Andrews? Dr. Sproul teaches part time at the seminary down here (Ft Lauderdale) and has also lectured at a program in my Church called A.R.T.S. (Advancing Reformation Truth and Spirituality). I have always enjoyed his teaching and wondered what his Church was like.

Stucco

Thanks for the suggestion. I know about RC Sproul's church (it was checked out months before I moved and by phone weeks after I finally moved to Orlando). I also know they have NO openings where my wife and I may presently serve, thus this church is not under consideration. As I stated in my original reply, choosing a church (Reformed and conservative) also includes where one maybe able to serve and not just selecting a denomination, a good preacher, et. al.

Yeah, I wrote a letter to the President of the college, never got a response, graduated shortly afterwards, haven't looked back. The President of the college has a reputation for remaining aloof, and for doing what the board tells him. I might have been able to do more, but I was already anathema for being "one of those calvinists...."

First of all young man Gene Kelly did a lot more than ball room dancing. Oy a youngster like you is making me feel old. Second so you would have had no one to dance with are you sure or are you merely making a surmise based upon the initial reactions of the crowd? I believe the second but it is irrelevant. The important thing is to do all to the glory of God. Base what you do upon that and you can't go wrong.

O yeah and be Salt and Light.

Hind sight is always 20-20, yes I should have taken it to the next level. That's two years in the past, and it feels good to have kicked the dust off the sandals. I spent four years at that school, and fought hard for the truth of the Gospel, which is the Doctrines of Grace, or calvinism, however one wants to put it. By the time all that stuff came up, I was tired of fighting. So maybe there was some apathy involved there, too. My college years produced more baggage than I care to discuss openly, here, but I can say that my walk rises and falls, as does anyone else's. I'm not going to beat myself up for what I should have done, anymore; but I'm also not going to ignore it as if I never even did the wrong thing, either. the older I get the more I realise that I don't have this thing called life figured out, but were God not in control I would have ended it years ago. I don't know if that is a sufficient answer for you, but it is the truth. May God bless,
troy

My dear young Christian Brother,
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Your courage in standing for the Lord in what must have been a very difficult situation, has been an encouragement to me and to another with whom I have shared it, as has been the manner in which you have accepted and responded to the wise advice which others have given you.I am sorry I have not had an opportunity to reply earlier. To be a young man, and a Christian, is not easy.(I'm sure Daniel would agree). Nevertheless always remember, "Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: [color:red]But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Isaiah 40:30-31 May God enable you so to do, and as you more and more realise your own weakness, may you increasingly experience His grace and power in a life lived to His glory alone.
Your brother in Christ.
Brian.

Wow. Thanks so much for all your encouragement. In a world that is very dark, it is wonderful to hear that the Lord has "7,000 who have not bent the knee to Baal."

Hi,

I am new to the forum but certainly appreciate the discourse. I thought I would throw my 2 cents in since I dance for a hobby. The dancing I do is partner dancing - specifically West Coast Swing and Hustle. I am no pro but fairly comfortable on the floor. I would encourage those who are not thrilled about young kids "shaking" around to try to learn a partner dance and then demonstrate for the youngsters. I think when the kids see "cool" dancing to popular music they will be interested.

The fact is that dancing is simply moving your body to music. You can make it sexual or non sexual (rythmic by itself is not sexual - we all have hips, legs, etc. - part of the package that God made and called "good".).

I think some grace is in order to young people who are simply growing up and trying to socially integrate and explore at some level (natural part of human development). I would not get too worked up over kids acting in a manner that is pretty normal and that they pretty much grow out of in a short time (remember all the screaming girls at the Beatles concerts....). The real issue is how can we as Christians who have gone through these phases, now developed and grasping Christ to some extent provide support for them to ease their way through these times as best as possible. Condemantion is not it - that was done by the Pharisees when Jesus did not live/behave as they expected a proper "Christian" should ("to think, eating and drinking with sinners....").

Although I am not always happy with my past behavior, it is something that brings me to my present behavior.

In Christ,
Human

I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement, just having gotten out of high school this last spring, I too know that school can be quite "eye opening" sometimes. I wish I could say college is better, really, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't, that just reflects the society we're living in.

I for one determined from the first day on that I wasn't going to go to dances in high school and in fact, aside from the academic olympic events my first three years and a sports event (volleyball) my freshman year and (basketball) my senior year (both supporting members of my church), I didn't go to any of my school's extraciricular events. With some people this hurt and with some people this helped my witness. I've never been a soul winner, but I know that despite that, my example still had a positive affect on students around me and I can honestly say that I depicted Christians different than most of the assumptions people around me had about Christianity.
While I would never discourage zeal, I would encourage you to think about how that zeal will be interpreted, I know that my freshman year I was zealous like none other and that haunted me for some time during my upper classman years. On the flip side, I wasn't very zealous my upperclassman years b/c I was experienceing turbulance and had lost some of my zeal for the word due to my (then opposition) to calvinism which was just first being preached to me at that time.
All that being said though, Don't be afraid to experience high school events, just don't take part in sin, obey your conscience and convictions. Your school needs Christians who are about Christ and who know what they're talking about, continue in the Lord, walk well and keep an eye on your actions and attitudes. From the sound of it, you've got a lot of potential to affect your school for Christ.

God bless you brother, and keep you in all the dark places you may walk.

-Brother Luke
JF2, I only wish more of the younger generation were as you. You have a heart for the Lord, strong convictions, and an excellent head on your shoulders. I have worked with and am around youth constantly (being only twenty myself), but those such as you are few and far between. It is a great encouragement to see such a strong child of His.
