Thanks for your information (according to James White’s assertion) that the Council of Nicea had nothing to do with canonicity

The reason I quoted the James White article is that he is saying what I also have found out from my own research. Starting with my father-in-law and about 5 other people and sources in the last couple of years, I have heard this same argument - 'the Council of Nicea just picked and chose the Canon we have today and we don't really know if this is the whole Bible etc. etc.' These people all believe this information is true and correct. This is what disturbs me. It seems like this whole thing is a secular "urban legend" about the history of NT Canon. (and I know this is one of MANY secular, un-believing assertions made of many things of the Lord). If you read the New Advent link you provided earlier you will find there is NO mention at all of Canon of the NT being discussed at Nicea. This is why I originally asked where you got your information from because I am not finding it!!

Yeah the KJV Onlyism is a big deal to James White because those people have thwarted James' work in witnessing to the Mormons in SLC. There's a real interesting article about this at his site -- http://aomin.org/StreetAbuse.html I would imagine this is why he debates and wrote a book about the KJV Onlyism error.

Janean,

A few posts back I made the following statement:

BelievingThomas wrote: It might have been a secondary purpose for the bishops who gathered to decide and establish an "official" (according to Roman catholicism) accepted canon for the New Testament books.

According to my original words, I at least said that it "might have" had this secondary purpose and now I know from your assertions that it absolutely did not.

I did read the following site that you provided a link to and I agree with White's information. The site is a good one and I think is associated with Hank Hanegraaff, the "Bible Answer Man".

It will certainly teach me not to share something for which I am not sure of its background. I know that this "urban legend" as you called it was drilled into me on many occasions by various individuals who at the time (years ago now) appeared to be learned scholars. I did not question it because most I shared it with did not care and I had not been led yet to research the true purpose of the council.

I was mistaken and I appreciate your taking the time to point out my error and I have turned and been enlightened to this truth!
